One Florida resident earned a nice payday last weekend.
An unnamed person from the Sunshine State was one of eight people who won $125,000 by correctly picking the outcomes of six NFL games in the FOX Super 6 app. More than 1.3 million people signed up for the contest.
While regulated sports betting in Florida is not currently legal, residents can enter the Super 6 contest because there is no entry fee.
And one Floridian took full advantage.
How the FOX Super 6 win went down
To access the FOX Super 6 free contest, users log into the app and make six picks related to Sunday games. For each matchup, contestants can pick one of 14 different point spreads: seven for each team.
This past weekend’s contest featured the following lines with final scores in parentheses:
- New Orleans Saints +13 over Atlanta Falcons (Saints won 24-9)
- Carolina Panthers +13 over Detroit Lions (Panthers won 20-0)
- Cleveland Browns +4-7 over Philadelphia Eagles (Browns won 22-17)
- Pittsburgh Steelers +13 over Jacksonville Jaguars (Steelers won 27-3)
- Tennessee Titans +4-7 over Baltimore Ravens (Titans won 30-24 in OT)
- Indianapolis Colts +1-3 over Green Bay Packers (Colts won 34-31 in OT)
According to a press release, only 10% of contestants correctly predicted the Colts line, and only 2% were right on the Panthers game. Here’s a look at three games that certainly had the eight winners sweating.
Colts cover spread in nail-biter
In what turned out to be the most entertaining game of the daytime slate, the Colts edged out an overtime win over the Packers.
The Colts overcame a 14-point halftime deficit to tie the game 31-31 at the end of regulation. Green Bay won the coin toss in overtime, but two plays in, wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling fumbled that allowed Indianapolis to take possession. The Colts needed just four plays to set up the eventual game-winning field goal.
Henry slams door on Ravens
In what was the most dramatic finish to the FOX Super 6 contest, gargantuan running back Derrick Henry scored on a 29-yard run to win the game for the Titans in overtime.
The touchdown gave Tennessee a six-point victory and covered the 4-7 point spread.
Panthers game wasn’t close
The Panthers’ victory wasn’t in doubt, but the final five minutes of the game were relatively interesting. Kicker Joey Slye made a 37-yard field goal with 4 minutes, 57 seconds left in the fourth. His kick extended the Panthers’ lead to 20 points, which offset the danger of a Detroit covering with TD and PAT.
The Lions responded with a drive that ended at the Carolina 46-yard line, ensuring the Panthers’ cover. Detroit’s offense was inept, likely due to the absence of dynamic playmakers Kenny Golladay and D’Andre Swift.
