The ACC has produced a ton of NFL talent over its history as one of the top conferences in the country. Below is a look at five former ACC football players who stood out in college.
- Trevor Lawrence: This pick is the most recent, as the Clemson QB was one of the top college football players in the country for years. Lawrence then became the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft. He won a National Championship his freshman season and led his team to the College Football Playoff all three years he was in college.
- Charlie Ward: Florida State’s quarterback won the ACC’s first Heisman Trophy in the 1993 season when the Seminoles won the National Championship. Ward decided against going to the NFL and instead played nine seasons in the NBA.
- Lawrence Taylor: The former North Carolina linebacker became one of the best defensive players in NFL history. Before that, he was named an unanimous All-American three times and set the school’s single-season sack record of 16 and was named the ACC Player of the Year.
- Calvin Johnson: As a Georgia Tech wide receiver, he rewrote the school’s record book when it comes to receiving statistics. “Megatron” left with the all-time high in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. He was a two-time All-American and earned the Biletnikoff Award, which is given to the season’s top receiver.
- Luke Kuechly: The former Boston College linebacker made his name known in the ACC with his 532 career tackles. That was a new record for the conference and was the second-most in NCAA history. He was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year and earned numerous awards including the Lombardi, Nagurski and Butkus awards in college.
