Churchill Downs has promoted Jason Stoess to vice president and general manager of Calder Casino in Miami, effective immediately. Stoess most recently served as senior director of finance and succeeds Rich Sukhu, who was recently promoted to lead Rockingham Grand Casino and Chaser’s Poker Room in New Hampshire.
Stoess moves into top role at Calder
According to Churchill Downs, Stoess brings a 34-year career that included several finance leadership positions. The company said he also contributed to enterprise-wide initiatives across its gaming and racing operations.
Michael Meagher said Stoess has contributed meaningfully to both Calder and Churchill Downs for decades and said he is confident the executive will build on the foundation established at the property.
Stoess said he wants to preserve Calder’s culture, trust and investment in people while also embracing new concepts and opportunities. He also said his goal is to strengthen Calder’s position as a source of entertainment in the local community and as a workplace where team members can build careers.
Leadership change follows Sukhu’s promotion
Stoess replaces Rich Sukhu, who had served as Calder’s president and general manager since 2019. Churchill Downs recently promoted Sukhu to become vice president and general manager of Rockingham Grand Casino and Chaser’s Poker Room in New Hampshire.
For Calder guests, the announcement does not include any changes to gaming operations, amenities or property access. The update is a leadership move at one of South Florida’s casino properties, with Churchill Downs signaling continuity while installing a longtime internal executive in the top role.
Churchill Downs has also made other leadership changes recently. In August, the company announced Eric Thomson as senior vice president of marketing and partnerships at Churchill Downs Racetrack.
