Caesars Entertainment is partnering with one of the oldest real estate development conglomerates in the US to build a mixed development district near Harrah’s Pompano Beach Casino in Florida.

The Cordish Companies and Caesars Entertainment plan a 223-acre development in Pompano Beach, just 35 miles north of Miami, next to the successful Harrah’s Pompano Beach, a Florida casino operated by Caesars.

The project, which will be called The Pomp, calls for 4,000 residential units, two hotels, more than 1 million square feet of office space and Harrah’s Pompano Beach Live! as its centerpiece for entertainment and a tourist draw. Once completed, it would be one of the largest mixed-use development communities in the state.

The development will be built on the former site of Isle Casino and racetrack, which Caesars purchased in 2018. The locale already hosts Harrah’s Pompano Beach, which houses a 40-table World Series of Poker room and 1,500 slot machines.

Why Caesars is building The Pomp

In a statement announcing the development with Cordish, Caesars expressed its desire to venture into mixed-use development. The decline in horse racing has contributed to a focus on residential and hotel and entertainment development.

Caesars and Cordish are hopeful a first-class casino and resort development can draw visitors from across the state and the region. As many as 4,000 residential spaces within walking distance of the Harrah’s casino would serve as a foundation of potential consumers.

Founded in 1910, the Cordish Companies is a Baltimore-based real estate developer with extensive experience building entertainment venues. It also owns the Live! brand, which it has developed across the country, including at resort casinos in Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Arlington, St. Louis, Kansas City and Philadelphia.

“The Pomp represents one of the most dynamic opportunities for placemaking in the United States,” said Blake Cordish, principal of the Cordish Companies. “There is no comparable development in South Florida that combines casino gaming with best-in-class entertainment, retail, dining, hotel, residential, office and lifestyle amenities into one dynamic destination.”

It certainly makes sense for Caesars to expand its footprint in Florida, which will eventually legalize online sports betting and online casinos. As of now, the Seminole Tribe and its Hard Rock brand own a near-monopoly in Florida.

According to the development plan, The Pomp will include a Topgolf location with more than 100 hitting bays, a Sports & Social restaurant, a PBR Cowboy Bar, and other restaurants and commercial spaces. Some portions of the development, such as Topgolf, will open as soon as 2023.

“We are completely reimagining what this area of South Florida looks like for residents and visitors to Pompano Beach with The Pomp and Live! through our partnership with The Cordish Companies,” said President and COO of Caesars Entertainment, Anthony Carano.

“Building off the success of our newly remodeled and rebranded Harrah’s Pompano Beach casino, we are committed to delivering a one-of-a-kind entertainment and lifestyle destination, unlike anything in South Florida, that will provide the best in gaming, world-class amenities and attract new visitors to the dynamic area.”

The Cordish Companies is no stranger to Florida. It previously worked with the Seminole Tribe of Florida on its Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood and Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa. Currently the company is developing Vivo Dolphin Mall in Miami, as well as a 36,000-square-foot dining and entertainment project at The Pointe Orlando.
