Florida’s Gaming Control Commission says illegal slot machine activity across the state is larger than initially expected, and enforcement remains active with help from local, state, and federal law enforcement.
According to the commission, its Division of Gaming Enforcement worked 71 cases in August, seizing 346 slot machines, shutting down seven illegal locations, arresting 15 people, and confiscating $179,717.
Florida law prohibits slot machines outside of eight pari-mutuel facilities and licensed tribal casinos, making the latest enforcement numbers a reminder that unlicensed gaming operations remain a statewide issue.
August enforcement numbers show the scale of the crackdown
The Division of Gaming Enforcement also reported that 71 slot machines were destroyed last month. In total, the division worked through 314 investigative leads, though 48% of those were duplicates or involved locations that had already been reported.
Carl Harold, director of the FGCC’s gaming enforcement division, said cooperation with other agencies is expanding each month. He also said some locations that had previously been targeted by enforcement actions have started to reopen.
When asked about repeat offenders during a commission meeting, Harold said, “We have seen people with criminal records arrested by other agencies, and then they call us.”
What Florida players should take from the update
For Florida gambling consumers, the update does not change where slot machines are legally allowed. The state says legal slot play remains limited to eight pari-mutuel facilities and licensed tribal casinos.
The latest figures instead highlight the state’s focus on unlicensed storefront and back-room style machine operations.
