Major U.S. betting operators are heading into the NFL season expecting a sharper fight for customers after a summer lifted by the FIFA World Cup and heavy prediction-market activity.

Penn Entertainment CEO Jay Snowden said the coming months could be "quite the arms race this year," warning of "very aggressive, irrational" marketing and advertising spend. The comments came as operators and analysts pointed to strong World Cup engagement and to football season as the key test for sportsbook performance.

World Cup betting gave sportsbooks a strong summer

Jefferies analysts cited a record $20 billion in prediction markets during the FIFA World Cup, calling it the largest total ever recorded for a single sporting event.

At Penn, Truist analysts said 70% of the company’s online bettors placed at least one World Cup wager, and nearly half bet on soccer for the first time. BetMGM CEO Adam Greenblatt described the tournament as delivering "crazy, massive handle growth," adding that the U.S.-Belgium round-of-16 match generated more betting volume than any MLB or NBA playoff game or World Series contest.

Flutter Entertainment, FanDuel’s parent company, also said it posted its highest-ever June and July sports betting volume, helped by the World Cup and strong MLB activity.

FanDuel Predicts joins Flutter’s unified app push

Flutter said FanDuel Predicts will be part of its unified "one app," which combines sports betting, casino, fantasy and prediction markets in a single product. That puts prediction markets alongside more established wagering products as operators head into their most important part of the calendar.

Flutter CFO Rob Coldrake said, "Ultimately, performance will be determined by football season."

The broader scale of football betting remains large. The American Gaming Association said Americans legally wagered about $1.76 billion on Super Bowl LX in January. Snowden also noted that some platforms only launched NFL betting for the Super Bowl itself.

What players should watch before kickoff

The NFL preseason was set to begin next week, with the regular season scheduled to start Sept. 9. For players, the clearest near-term takeaway is that major operators appear to be entering football season with bigger product ambitions and expectations of tougher competition.

What is not yet clear from the source reporting is how much individual companies will spend on marketing or when FanDuel Predicts will be fully rolled out inside Flutter’s unified app. As the season approaches, readers should watch for confirmed launch timing, product changes and operator-specific updates — and gamble responsibly.
